ABOUT ME

Hi there, I’m Bertie Weal and thanks for visiting my site.

I’m an experienced freelance scenic artist working on theatre, film, installation, exhibition and theme park projects. I have worked with Meticulous Ltd, Souvenir Scenic Studio, Bay Productions and Ffotogallery, and I am experienced with a range of construction techniques including fiberglass laminating, sculpting in clay, carving and sculpting polystyrene, basic wood and textile work. Fundamentally scenic painting and creating textured effects. Volunteering in the setup of 2015 Diffusion photography festival in Cardiff and also running my own pinhole photography workshop to celebrate international pinhole day. i am also involved in various community conservation initiatives working to protect the natural environment of South Wales.

I studied at Brighton University and graduated with a 2:1 in Photography, where my main project ‘We Once Clothed the World’ was a response factory conditions in Leicestershire during the industrial revolution, and examined the way in which factories shaped culture, identity and the way of life of the working class.  My dissertation was concerned with memory and the way in which print and digital photographs function as family heirlooms. My current photographic and painting practice continues to explore these themes, and my interest in material culture very much informs my work as a prop and scenery maker. i am passionate about the outdoors and conservation, driven by my love of surfing, rock climbing, hiking and flyfishing.

If you’d like to contact me about prop and set construction, please email me at bertie_weal@yahoo.com
